Father of 3 and grandfather of 10, I can say boldly that the grand children are what got me started in photography in 2000! They were my first incentives to make great images, and they keep me busy, still!

After a career in public education, I retired to serve as a national consultant in 2005. The travel life led me to long walks in wildlife refuges, which in turn opened the hobby of photographing the beauty of creation. That passion continues: I set aside time regularly to visit refuges and other birding locations. One of my favorite pursuits is photographing bald eagles.

In 2008 I began to pursue my photography professionally, imaging events and making portraits. I soon learned how much there is to learn and that development as a professional photographer involved a life-long commitment to learning.

I embarked on the process of earning my Certified Professional Photographer credential in November 2011, realizing that only this would force me to grow to a level of verified skill. I earned the credential in July 2013 and was re-certified in 2016. This is no small accomplishment! Only 7.2% of the members of the Professional Photographers of America have earned this certification.

From that point forward, I have also committed myself to growing through participation in photographic competition, where my work has been evaluated by trained jurors against a set of 12 standards of excellence. As I work with colleagues at the state, district, and international levels submitting my work to evaluation and feedback, I have seen the quality improve steadily.

Competition, education, and service to the professional also represent the means to earning the Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman degrees through Professional Photographers of America. On January 10, 2017, I walked the stage at PPA’s annual Imaging USA convention to receive the Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees. What do the degrees represent?

  • Master of Photography degree: superior photographic competence demonstrated through photographic competition, advanced education and service to the profession.

  • Photographic Craftsman degree: recognition of service to the photographic profession as an orator, author and mentor.

Those degrees granted access into the American Society of Photographers, where members continue to pursue higher degrees.

I intend to continue participating in competition, working next toward the Master Artist degree, conferred upon those who accumulate 13 Photographic Artist merits at the International level, plus 12 additional merits for speaking, service, and publication.

Chris is a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) and CPP Liaison. CPP Liaisons assist candidates and existing CPPs as subject matter experts and sources of information. Each liaison must maintain his or her certification and PPA Membership, and is entrusted with responsibilities to maintain the integrity of the program."
